Bio

Dr. Abtew is a postdoctoral fellow under Future Faculity Inclusive Excellence program in the Textile and Apparel Managemernt (TAM) Department at the University of Missouri. He earned his PhD through the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Program, attaining degrees from three institutions: University of Lille in Automation and Production, Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iasi in Industrial Engineering, and Soochow University in Textile Engineering.

Dr. Mulat Alubel ABTEW has a diverse professional history. He spent two years as a Research and Teaching Associate at the School of Engineering (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Et Industries Textiles-ENSAIT) in France. Additionally, he served as an Assistant Professor and Lecturer at Bahir Dar University, Ethiopian Institute of Textile and Fashion Technology.

Dr. Abtew’s instructional repertoire spans a wide range of technical and managerial courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. These include subjects such as Technical Textiles, Composite Manufacturing, Apparel 3D Design, Pattern Engineering (CAD and Traditional), Apparel Manufacturing, Product Development, 3D Modeling Technical Foundations, Computer-Integrated Manufacturing, History of World Costume, Supply Chain Management, Retail Management, and Technology, among others.

His teaching approach integrates extensive research and real-world scenarios, enriching course syllabi to challenge and prepare students for future technical, managerial, and entrepreneurial careers. At the university level, Dr. Abtew has also actively contributed to various administrative, professional, and community service roles. These include positions such as Program Head, Director of Apparel Research & Innovation Centre, and Chair for the Curriculum Revision Committee.

His contributions and expertise have been recognized through multiple accolades, notably including the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship and the “International Research Thesis Award – 2021” by the University of Lille. This award recognized Dr. Abtew’s scientific excellence, characterized by high-quality scientific publications, international collaborations, and significant contributions across Northern France’s seven PhD schools.


Research Interests

Dr ABTEW research interests primarily revolve around addressing intricate challenges related to functional and industrial apparel products, with a specific emphasis on protective clothing. His goal is to augment their physical, quasi-static, and dynamic performance, while considering critical factors such as cost, accessibility, comfort, and sustainability.

His research portfolio spans across multiple disciplines, encompassing advanced textiles, fiber-reinforced composites, industrial engineering design, Apparel Engineering, textile material optimizations, 3D CAD modeling, and principles of dynamic impact engineering. Furthermore, he harbors a strong interest in comprehending and developing textile materials, as well as user-centric design approaches for adaptive apparel tailored to individuals with special needs. This inclusive approach extends to women, the elderly, and diverse ability or disability communities, aiming to create functional and purposeful clothing solutions that cater to their unique requirements.
